PhD in Exercise Science with Exercise is Medicine / Children and Physical Activity

Dr. Erin Howie Hickey, within the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation at the University of Arkansas is looking to fill a PhD Graduate Assistant position beginning in the fall semester of 2022. The Ph.D. program in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation is a research-focused degree that is designed to prepare scholars in advanced study to contribute to the field through teaching, research, and service. http://catalog.uark.edu/graduatecatalog/healthsportandexercisescience/ Students with interest in physical activity and health, especially among children, are strongly encouraged to apply.

About the Position: The position will be under the supervision of Dr. Erin K. Howie within the Exercise is Medicine research group ((https://exerciseismedicine.uark.edu/) which has two main research arms: 1) the effect of physical activity on educational outcomes in children, 2) promoting and assessing physical activity among students, faculty and staff on campus through the Exercise is Medicine-On Campus initiative. The position may include up to 50% teaching responsibilities. Successful applicants must have completed a master’s degree in a related field by start of the assistantship. The applicant should have experience (or willingness) working with children, be highly organized and have good personal and written communication skills. PhD Student Research Opportunity in Sport-Related Concussion at the University of Arkansas

Description: Dr. R.J. Elbin, Director for the Office for Sport Concussion Research at the University of Arkansas (https://exercisescience.uark.edu/research/sport-concussion-research/index.php), has funding for 1 – 2 PhD students starting in the Fall of 2022. This opportunity will enable students to conduct mentored and independent concussion research in both community (i.e., high school and youth sport league) and concussion specialty clinic patient populations. The current research focus of the lab broadly includes the examination of primary and secondary risk factors (e.g., anxiety and depression) on concussion recovery outcomes. In addition, other studies are directed at determining best practices for the clinical assessment, management, and treatment of concussion. Students with experience or interest in concussion research are strongly encouraged to apply.

Admission Criteria:
Doctoral Applicants: The applicant must have 1) completed a master’s degree or its equivalent in a field related to their specialization area to which they are applying, 2) meet general admission requirements of the Graduate School, and 3) a GPA of at least 3.00 on all graduate course work. The GRE is currently being waived through Fall 2022. However, a GRE score is needed to apply for UA fellowships. Additional prerequisites may be prescribed after review of application materials.
